Denouncing the Hegemony of White Neoliberalism in Teacher Education Through Critical Race Counternarratives

Abstract

In this paper, we examine the contradictions of a hegemonic white neoliberalism that shapes experiences of faculty of color in American higher education. Drawing on critical race and postcolonial theory and and critical counternarrative analysis, we argue that higher education institutions and teacher education are “pimping diversity”; for example, by tokenizing people of color to advance claims to be committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. Drawing from plantation theory and critical race theory, this article presents counternarrative analysis from three faculty of color who have faced systemic racism, invisibility, and microaggressions in higher education. Critique of white neoliberalism requires identification in shared place of struggle, and cross-racial solidarities-in-difference.
