Abstract

We use a self-study methodology to critique methods, including our own, that address Brown and Black student experiences but still employ traditional research designs and methods that maintain exclusion faced in higher education. This is important because there are limited spaces to learn about techniques to better inform researchers and educators about methodology centering Brown and Black people. We use reflexive discomfort to take responsibility for perpetuating marginalization and failing to properly account for the experiences of Brown and Black in our study. In addition, we use our lessons learned to move past institutionalized research practices that harm Brown and Black participants.
