Storytelling for Mathematics: Teachers' Perceptions of Mathematicians' Digital Stories and Their Potential for Instructional Use

Abstract

We propose that a study designed to heighten exposure and increase awareness of mathematics and mathematicians, through storytelling, may be an effective route to enhance teachers’ knowledge of diverse mathematicians and mathematics, improve teacher expectations of diverse students’ mathematical abilities, and broaden teachers’ instructional repertoires around mathematics. We report results from a larger project addressing these goals that incorporates an iterative research-design-development process. We developed short videos of digital math stories from longer interviews with 30 Black mathematicians exploring their formative, educational, and professional mathematics experiences. This paper reports on the second phase of the study: eliciting teachers’ perceptions of the stories and garnering ideas about how best to include them as a well-integrated component of a K-8 mathematics curriculum.
