Hood-in-g the Ivory Tower Amid Precarious Existence: Lessons From Black, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous Feminist Solidarities

Abstract

This work offers a reflection and articulation of our experiences—one of us a professor and one a doctoral student—as we move in, out, and between the spaces of the hood and the ivory tower. We begin by marking our journeys in relation to the writers and theorists who provide a bridge for us to travel, a theorizing space to imagine our work, and the language to articulate Black, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous feminist solidarities. We enter this conversation from different positionalities and entry points with a shared commitment to honouring our communities in our work. With this in mind, we document the lessons of a collective research story shared by Black, Indigenous, and Afro-Indigenous students PhD-ing amidst precarious existence.
