One of the most pervasive norms of America’s storied history is the pinnacle of educational hardships, disadvantages, and vulnerability associated with Black males (Noguera, 2009; Littles, Bowers, and Gilmer, 2007). Beset with such an array of disadvantages, there remains scant research on scalable and implementable best practices with fidelity across communities (and nationwide, when applicable) to ensure Black male college academic preparation, transition, and retention. This study investigates how involvement with a social justice college access program affects Black males’ college academic preparation, transition, and retention. Specifically, we focus on Black males during the transition to ninth grade.
