Abstract

What might be possible if teacher candidates are provided with opportunities to understand translanguaging concepts and utilize their full linguistic repertoires in reading children’s literature? In this qualitative multiple case study, we examined the potentials of bringing translanguaging pedagogies into teacher education programs. We engaged multilingual college students in a translanguaging interactive read-aloud video activity with multilingual/multicultural children’s literature and explored the ways in which they did (or did not) draw on all of their language repertoires in this activity. From this, we explored how teacher candidates might be better supported as they learn about translanguaging literacies through translanguaging pedagogies in teacher education programs.
