Thu, April 13, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Now, more than ever, there is an immediate need for a pedagogy of care in education that goes beyond intent into practice. The purpose of this study was to acknowledge and recognize pedagogical practices around caring in the classroom during disruptive learning times during the Covid-19 pandemic. The driving question for this study was: In what ways are caring relations fostered, embodied, and enacted in a high school design classroom? In particular, this paper explores the ways in which active learning strategies support care and student-centered learning in a coding classroom. Results from this study can inform the growth of transformative caring for every student, now and beyond the pandemic.
