Thu, April 13, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Missouri

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how Black women faculty at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) can better navigate the promotion and tenure process and develop a pathway to improve the socialization experiences of new faculty who are Black women. Using a qualitative research design with focus groups, data were collected from three focus groups. Participants taught in the STEM fields of engineering, mathematics, and science; and in education and communications. Findings expand the research on faculty of color plight to gain promotion and tenure at PWIs by focusing specifically on Black women faculty; using the Black feminist thought theory and critical race theory as theoretical frameworks; and by pointing toward the need for institutional accountability.
