"Racism Is a Human Nature": Chinese American Students Respond to Historical Realistic Picture Books in a Community-Based Book Club

Abstract

Building on AsianCrit and culturally situated reader response theory, this study investigates how two Chinese American children at age eight to twelve respond to culturally relevant picture books which portrays early Chinese immigrant histories in the United States. Specifically, this study investigates how second-generation Chinese American students talk about race and social justice through associating with the stories, their everyday experience, family traditions, and interactions with peers and researcher in a community-based book club. Specifically, this study explores how Chinese American students respond to the xenophobia, discriminations, and racism towards Asian people, especially people with Chinese descent, during the COVID-19 pandemic through reading a text set and news related to COVID-19 and hate crimes.
