This project utilizes Transformative Social Emotional Learning (TSEL) to challenge the way practitioners and policymakers are examining the social and emotional needs/outcomes of students of color and those low-income backgrounds. This research aims to add to a conversation surrounding the assessment and implementation of transformational social emotional learning policies and practices. In this paper, we hope to accomplish the following: 1) Highlight the existence of methods and measures connected to TSEL (identity, agency, belonging, collaborative problem solving, and wellness) and 2) Garner a clear understanding for if/how these measures and methods connect to race and equity. Overall, the measures have not been validated and normed taking racial issues into consideration. Implications for policy, practice, and future TSEL works are discussed.
