Critical Infrastructure? An Investigation Into the Evolution of a Research-Practice Partnership Across Time and Boundaries

Abstract

Research-practice partnerships (RPPs) can have positive impacts on educational outcomes (e.g., Booth et al., 2015). Yet, RPPs face challenges, as they are dynamic and situated. For example, RPPs can face difficulties in developing common understandings (Farrell et al., 2019), dealing with turnover (Coburn et al., 2013), and navigating differences in cultural norms, practices, and expectations (Penuel et al., 2015). Through insights from one longitudinal case study of a multi-partner project, we examine how challenges closed some aspects of collaboration and were successfully navigated to preserve or modify others. Specifically, we examine how the goals, roles and responsibilities of the partners in our RPP shifted over time and how boundary infrastructure supported the complexities of working together.
