It is well documented that Black students are subjected to unequal learning experiences and outcomes, particularly in mathematics education. Given the nature of mainstream mathematics education, the purpose of this study is to understand how a veteran Black mathematics teacher acts as a protective factor by supporting her students to learn mathematics despite the inequalities in the broader educational context. Specifically, we consider how a veteran African American mathematics teacher positions herself as a warm demander, and how her students experience her warm demander pedagogy. Findings suggest that the teacher is dedicated to her students’ needs and acts as an advocate for her students. On the students’ end, they describe her culturally congruent teaching practices and dedication to them.
