Sat, April 15, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Most teachers in America are White and female. The teacher workforce does not represent the student body. Initiatives to improve diversity are not working due to the attrition rates of teachers of color (TOC). This qualitative study explored the experiences of mentor teachers of TOC. Data gathered suggest that race mattered in mentoring relationships with TOC. Cross-racial mentors mostly provided professional support and while mentors in same-race mentoring relationships also provided socio-emotional support.
