Abstract

This study aims to systematically examine the literature that focused on teachers’ and students’ attitudes toward translanguaging in English-medium Instruction (EMI) classrooms as well as the various reasons behind utilizing translanguaging. A total of 22 studies were included in the present study. Results show that of the 22 studies, 15 studies explicitly reported findings relevant to different stakeholders’ attitudes toward translanguaging in EMI contexts whereas 16 studies reported reasons for translanguaging that yielded positive attitudes. It was found that a) building background knowledge and b) cross-linguistic flexibility were two most commonly identified reasons that positively contributed to the use of translanguaging in EMI classrooms based on García and Wei (2014). Scientific and practical implications of the results will be discussed.
