Abstract

In this paper, we explore how faculty, staff, and college leaders perceive the needs of students in online courses and the supports and strategies they are implementing to support student success in online courses. In particular, we focus on a set of interconnected mindsets and competencies that we collectively refer to as self-directed learning (SDL) skills. Drawing on interview data from nine broad-access postsecondary institutions, we examine stakeholders’ understandings of student learning needs in online courses and the role of the institution in supporting the development of student learning mindsets and competencies. Finally, we identify challenges and opportunities for strengthening instructional supports for SDL skill development in online courses.
