Re-Visioning a Social Studies Curriculum

• In Event: How Do Teachers Understand Authenticity, Justice, and Praxis?

Abstract

New Mexico Public Education Department adopted a revised set of social studies standards, including evidence-based and culturally responsive instruction focusing on the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to ensure students in New Mexico are college, career, and civic ready. A current study found that the materials needed by teacher educators to meet the “culturally responsive” new standards were virtually non-existent. The session objective is to discuss how an interdisciplinary research team created a consequential practice with educators. This practice opens an intimate and organic space where educators and students could speak to their unique lived experiences and learn from their peers’ experiences in teaching—collecting their thoughts on the available social studies curriculums at their schools.
