This project explores Maria Popova’s (2019) novel, Figuring, and its implications for feminist qualitative research practices. Figuring invites researchers to engage in relational, dialogic ways to connect with participants more deeply across space and time. Through the lens of art, literature and science, we identify four relational and dialogic paradigmatic shifts that occur as we take up Figuring, or meaning-making, as a conceptual framework: 1) space-time shifts, 2) empirical shifts, 3) relational shifts, 4) world-making shifts. We share how these shifts dislodge normative spaces to (re)imagine socially just and equitable placemaking in qualitative research.
