Abstract

Based on self-determination theory, this study investigated the reciprocal relationship between autonomy support, intrinsic motivation, and reading performance using a longitudinal research design. A total of 856 secondary school students participated in this study for three consecutive years. A cross-lagged panel model was conducted to explore the reciprocal relationship between autonomy support, intrinsic motivation, and reading performance, and to examine the mediating effect of intrinsic motivation between autonomy support and reading performance. The results showed that there was a reciprocal relationship between autonomy support, intrinsic motivation, and reading performance. And intrinsic motivation played a mediating role in the promotion process of autonomy support on reading performance. The theoretical and practical implications of this study were discussed.
