Unpacking Graduate Degree Aspirations of Community College Transfer Students of Color: A QuantCrit and Transfer Receptive Culture Analysis

Abstract

This study aimed to identify factors that shape and sustain the doctoral degree aspirations of community college transfer students of color across institutional characteristics to determine a campus climate experience to examine how these aspirations varied across colleges and universities within the U.S. Key findings include students’ experience with a hostile campus climate, as well as financing their education through grants—appeared to shape odds in doctoral aspirations than having no aspiration to obtain a graduate degree. Frameworks of Critical Race Theory and a Transfer Receptive Culture offer critical discussions for implications, research, policy, and practice.
