Asian Americans Before and After COVID-19: Epistemic Network Analysis of Asian American Education Literature

Abstract

Asian Americans have frequently and simultaneously viewed as model minorities and the perpetual foreigners (Lee, 1994; Wu, 2002). Due to these stereotypes, Asian American racial positionality has always been precarious and in flux due to global events like COVID-19. While COVID-19 case counts increased so did hate crimes against Asian Americans, showing how Asian Americans are perceived by the broader U.S. society. To understand this phenomena, this study used Epistemic Network Analysis (ENA) to compare education literature that was written before and after COVID-19 to understand how the model minority myth and perpetual foreigner myth has shaped Asian American racial position in education literature.
