Around the Kitchen Table: Proposing a Family Research Methodology

Abstract

Three Irish-American sibling researchers found themselves in want of a framework to explain their involvement in a long-term collaborative research project. Drawing from their respective academic backgrounds in the field of education, two of the siblings, the authors, propose a Family Research Methodology (FRM). FRM draws on several existing bodies of knowledge including community-based research and collaborative research. The authors acknowledge the influence of Irish-American culture on their framework and recognize connections to Indigenous research methodologies. This submission sketches the features and values of an emerging FRM and proposes the application (and refinement of the framework) to a case study of a family-driven research project.
