Abstract

Human-Centered Design (HCD) is a problem-solving approach that uses design thinking tools to identify the unmet needs of a population to collaboratively and iteratively develop solutions. Integrating HCD in a language for health professions course provided them with opportunities to learn about and implement HCD processes and apply their understanding of the role of language in the health and wellness of US Latinx communities. In this study we assessed the impact of the course on students’ knowledge of performing HCD processes, their development of the human-centered and metacognitive mindsets, and their understanding of the role of language in the health and wellness of US Latinx communities. Findings indicated a positive impact of integrating HCD in the course on students’ learning.
