When Equity Matters: Understanding How Teacher Preparation Programs Recruit and Select Guiding Teachers

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Swissôtel Chicago, Floor: Event Centre, 1st Floor, Vevey 2

Abstract

Arguably, one of the critical program features for TPPs is preparing future teachers to work with diverse learners and in diverse settings. Yet, TPPs continue to struggle in the preparation of candidates that are responsive to the assets and needs of students historically and currently marginalized by the educational system. An influential programmatic aspect that can foster shifts in candidates’ equity dispositions is the field experience. While much of the literature has focused on student-guiding teacher relationships, we know little about the equity focused processes by which programs recruit and select guiding teachers. Employing a comparative, qualitative case study, this study sheds light on the ways in which programs prioritize equity in the recruitment and selection of guiding teachers.
