Revisiting the Influence of Competitive Attitudes on Achievement: Evidence From PISA 2018 (Poster 33)

Abstract

With a debated topic of whether competition is good or bad for achievement outcomes, the present study was designed to study the relationship between students’ competitive attitudes and academic achievement. In this article, we revisited this issue with in-depth analyses of how school and country contexts might be related to their relationships. Using the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 data and World Values Survey (WVS) from 57 countries, the study estimated a set of three-level Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) models with cross-level interactions. Our findings revisited the effects of competition and highlighted the importance of attending to the interplay of the student and the socio-cultural contexts when examining the relationships between students’ competitive attitudes and achievements.
