Abstract

Extensive media interest has focused on the concern that difficult teaching conditions during the pandemic may exacerbate existing teacher shortages nationwide (Barnum, 2022). Teachers report increased job-related stress and say they are more likely to leave the profession now than they were prior to the pandemic (Diliberti & Schwartz, 2021; Steiner & Woo, 2021). This paper describes teacher mobility and attrition within Chicago Public Schools prior to and during the pandemic. We examine correlates of teacher attrition within the district including teacher characteristics, teacher relational congruence (e.g. principal race match), school demographics, school reported issues with student behavior, school academic outcomes, and survey-based measures of school climate. Finally, we describe the extent to which predictors of attrition shifted during the pandemic.
