Abstract

In higher education, initiatives aimed at improving justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) are often conceptualized and implemented separately from those addressing students’ and faculty’s learning experiences and outcomes—and the reverse is also true. Drawing on data from a five-year change project and sociocultural perspectives, we present the I2 Framework, which integrates JEDI and learning goals through a systems-oriented approach that considers classroom, department, and organizational contexts. We then investigate the types of organizational supports needed to address JEDI and learning in an integrated way across classroom and departmental scales. The I2 Framework provides guidance to practitioners, policymakers, and leaders working towards equitable, consequential learning at the classroom level and an inclusive climate at departmental and institutional levels.
