Reimagining Leadership Through Literacy: Examining the Impact of Trauma on Immigrant-Origin Adolescents During COVID-19

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine (a) the impact of shelter in place on immigrant-origin adolescents and how students made sense of their experiences and (b) explore the role that literacy in schools can take in making sense of students’ lived experiences. The findings of this study hold the potential to offer possible critical pedagogical implications that affirm the experiential knowledge of adolescents as a catalyst for exploring literacy in the midst of trauma. In addition, this study aims to gain more insight about how teachers can better support immigrant-origin adolescents on school grounds so to nurture their learning experiences during a pandemic.
