Abstract

Protocol is a novel game-for-learning where players are challenged to create a software and hardware system to send information quickly between physically isolated players. Protocol was introduced as a team project as part of the “Equity Lab” -- the first special education course in a Master’s level graduate program for STEM educators preparing to become certified secondary math, science, or computer science teachers. We report on the initial trial of a design experiment with Protocol, conducted with a small graduate course during an intensive course taught in Summer 2022. Initial findings show that the game supports open-ended learning; motivates students who are studying new, challenging materials; and successfully models a STEAM based, “maker” pedagogy for teacher candidates.
