This study aimed to examine profiles of math motivation characterized by self-perceptions of ability and interest, along with stereotypes about boys’ and girls’ ability and interest among 668 adolescent girls in the U.S. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four motivational profiles: High, Medium-High, Medium-Low, and Low. The High/Medium-High and Low/Medium-Low profiles tended to be associated with high and low math achievement, respectively. We also found that socioeconomically disadvantaged and high school students were overrepresented in the Low profile. Students in the High profile tended to believe that boys, girls, and they themselves were good and interested in math, suggesting that motivational interventions should promote the belief that all students can be successful and enjoy math.
