In this study, the author analyzes the perceptions of Black women mathematicians about their experiences in mathematics spaces in Brazil. The following questions guided this study: what are the racialized and gendered configurations of Black women’s experiences in mathematics education in Brazil? What do Black women’s experiences tell us about mathematics education in Brazil? Black women’s perceptions were captured through stories they shared in recent academic events. Findings suggest that mathematics education in Brazil positions Black women as unfit for mathematics and disregard their multifaceted realities. More research is needed to disrupt notions of racial neutrality in Brazil and investigate the complex ways in which (Brazilian) mathematics education is structured to exclude Black women.
