A Critical Review of Research Related to Black Feminist Approaches to Doctoral Mentoring

Fri, May 5, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Division I Virtual Sessions, Division I - Education in the Professions Virtual Roundtable Room

Abstract

Advancing the theme of the 2023 AERA Annual Meeting, Division I: Education in the Professions asks scholars to “to question, deliberate, and reflect on what it means for researchers to ‘interrogate’ in the process of conducting education research, and whether our current research practices allow us to do this effectively.” However, before we interrogate the research process, it is important to contemplate how we prepare graduate students to become educational researchers, particularly Black women. In this paper, the authors engage in a critical review of relevant literature on the mentoring of Black women doctoral students. Informed by Black Feminist Thought, mentoring can move beyond nurturing the scholarly development of Black women doctoral students to facilitate their transformation as educational researchers.
