Abstract

Education research has often been utilized to inform practice and policy given its ability to highlight educational challenges and opportunities. Such explicit and empirical evidence revealed through various methodological approaches has contributed to data-rich conversations about practices and next steps. Perhaps now more than ever, education research is needed to inform instructional practices and impactful policies that support learning outcomes for all students. Thus, it is essential to have education research that contributes to the extant literature and helps a range of educational stakeholders make informed, evidence-based decisions. This literature review will examine educational research that informs practice and policy related to inquiry-based learning in social studies and includes recommendations for further research that impacts K-12 teachers and teacher educators.
