Antiracist Research-Practice Partnerships as Critical Education: Dismantling the Master's House With Their Own Tools?

Abstract

We reflect upon an anti-racist research practice partnership (RPP) focused on dismantling the school to prison pipeline/nexus (STPP). Using the Black Emancipatory Action Research Framework, we answer two research questions: 1) how can an anti-racist RPP can dismantle the STPP/Nexus and 2) how does collaborative inquiry impact group dynamics among the university and community. Data include internal documents, observational notes, meeting transcripts, oral histories, surveys, and focus groups. Participants center Black children in schools as the primary way to promote racial justice. They navigated institutional and organizational challenges, limited capacity, differing expectations, and frustration between university and community. Our work extends the RPP by engaging in a prefigurative politics that is decolonizing and Afro-futurist in the present moment.
