Abstract

In this proposal, we build on and extend research on transformative agency among youth. More specifically, we draw on ethnographic methods to document a team of high school students of colors’ expressions of agency and the cultural tools that mediate this process. Students were part of a youth-led critical civic engagement program. We draw on ethnographic approaches embedded in a case study design to document and understand the dynamic and culturally mediated process of youths' transformative agency. Our findings indicate culturally mediated tools that shaped facets of team members’ transformative agency across a school year. Our research provides key insights into the kinds of meaning and forms of participation that may fuel and sustain young people’s transformative agency.
