Although a robust empirical literature has established the influence of neighborhood context on a range of academic outcomes, the relationship between school discipline and neighborhoods has been largely overlooked. The prevalence and disparities in school discipline may be a consequence of social disorganization in neighborhoods. Drawing on a rich, longitudinal dataset from New York City, this study extends the findings of prior studies on school discipline and neighborhoods by examining the relationship between neighborhoods and multiple disciplinary outcomes at the student-level. Students living in more socially disorganized neighborhoods have a higher likelihood of receiving exclusionary discipline. School staff racial diversity and school climate moderate the relationships between neighborhoods and discipline.
