Purposes for Elementary Science Conveyed in State Academic Standards

Abstract

This study investigates the purposes for elementary science conveyed in s U.S. state standards documents. The indicate that state academic standards emphasize career/college/job preparation, whereas science educators emphasize nobler reasons for teaching and learning science (Lederman & Abell, 2014). This study raises issues about the alignment of policymakers’ purposes for science instruction with that of teachers in light of teacher attrition and teachers’ stated reasons for leaving the profession.
