Abstract

Institutions of higher education are returning to pre-pandemic operations. Educational delivery, however, has been permanently altered by COVID-19, emergency remote teaching, and stakeholders’ deeper understanding of online education. Journalism and mass communication (JMC) programs are evolving as more industry organizations embrace remote work. JMC leaders, instructors, and staff will need to carefully consider how to best prepare online students for jobs in communication professions. This paper summarizes how 31 expert online JMC educators conceptualize experiential learning in online environments. Qualitative analysis identified seven key themes that expert online JMC educators believe are critical considerations for strengthening the online student experience. Findings contribute insights into how instructors can design and deliver better experiential learning opportunities in professional fields within communication.
