Abstract

Observation and record keeping are fundamental for effective Montessori practice. Many systems, both paper/pencil and electronic, have been developed for the purposes of facilitating record keeping. Still, little empirical research is available on the topic. This paper leverages data from an online record keeping system to answer basic questions about teachers’ record keeping practices as well as to gather evidence related to the extent of materials use in Early Childhood classrooms. This initial investigation suggests further potential to understand teachers’ recordkeeping practices through the analysis of secondary data from online record keeping systems. Furthermore, the results suggest that researchers may find support for understanding Montessori practices, and perhaps even fidelity, through further examination of databases like Transparent Classroom.
