Abstract

Research on high-poverty schools demonstrates that a focus on improving literacy improves student outcomes and classroom teacher practice (Taylor, 2011). This study draws on three interrelated aspects of literacy research: essential content for teaching literacy; systems and routines (including independent reading and interactive writing); and fostering literacy engagement and motivation. These three focal concepts of this research were choice and collaboration, authenticity, and responsiveness to culture and need. This case study examined the literacy practices of two early literacy teachers in kindergarten and first grade to determine if ongoing professional development and coaching would improve their instruction and student outcomes in literacy. Findings demonstrate that this model positively impacts teacher practice and student achievement in literacy.
