The COVID-19 pandemic has presented unique challenges for adolescents as a result of the extensive and protracted disruptions to their academic and social engagement. In April, 2021, we asked high schoolers to respond to the following open-ended question question: “What ways did you show resilience during this past year?” Using open thematic coding (N = 2,303 high school students), we have identified 29 thematic categories, including traits (such as positivity), self-regulation strategies (such as goal-setting), and activities (such as physical exercise). Trends in student responses will be discussed, such as the higher reporting rates of activities and traits as compared to strategies, as well as future directions and applications.
