Abstract

Against the backdrop of increasing language endangerment in Indonesia, I investigate contestation over minority language rights in education and changing language ideologies. Focusing on five focal provinces in Nusa Tenggara Timur Province (NTT) in eastern Indonesia, I draw upon survey and interview data to show how minority language rights are understood, debated and enacted by teachers, parents and community members. By examining how minority language rights are framed and contested, this paper sheds light on processes of ethnolinguistic categorization and multilingual teaching and learning.
