Parenting and STEMming: Black Graduate Students Navigate the Strain of Multiple Roles

Abstract

Black PhD STEM students experience elevated strain as they attempt to cope with the racialized and oppressive environments in which they earn advanced degrees (McGee et al., 2019). Utilizing Bowman’s (1984) role strain, this study seeks to understand what role strains Black engineering and computing students navigate to find success in racialized STEM environments. Findings reveal that Black parents face disproportionate strains as they navigate their graduate student roles.
