Abstract

Our research objective is to better understand the existing knowledges and decision-making processes of rural Latina/o youth and parents as they reflect on challenges to fund a college education. Data is gathered through focus group interviews with Latina/o youth planning to attend college. We offer a rich local portrait of one rural Midwestern community with a 100-year history of immigrant residents. We explore parents’ roles and family decision-making discussions The research is situated in the context of a thirty-year rural community-campus project with ongoing support from partners from the local immigrant community, K-12 school faculty/administrators, and university faculty/students.
