Abstract

ADHD eligibility and treatment options for racially diverse children vary. Yet same-race families are not similar in their ADHD perceptions, precluding broad generalizations. Professionals are less well versed with how racial diversity factors into options for the children. We conducted a systematic review of over 100 studies to discern factors that influence family decisions, including the extent to which they perceive their children’s behavior is acceptable, emphasizing how context and culture are relevant factors. Such factors may normalize behaviors that professionals understand differently. Indeed, professionals have a responsibility to expand their knowledge and examine their views to encompass those from racially diverse families. Our results can inform this reeducation process by exposing family perceptions and informing professionals’ perspectives and actions.
