"I Want My Cat to Talk": Exploring Social Emotional Learning With Storytelling

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

In this study, we designed a storytelling activity for elementary schoolers to construct a story that included a creative friend and themselves. Through the storytelling process, we discovered that students became more capable of thinking about others and less egocentric. Our study presented theoretical and practical evidence to support using storytelling as an approach to improve students’ socio-emotional capacity. From this study, we believe the range of experiences provided by storytelling provides powerful tools to enhance socio-emotional capacity in children and young people.
