Welcome Back: Observations of South Carolina Middle School Teachers Post-COVID-19

Thu, April 13, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 4th Floor, Grace

Abstract

Classroom observations are used in teacher evaluations in all 50 states, with the classroom environment a key component. The learning loss and behavioral challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic has made the return to the classroom all the more important, particularly for students in high-needs schools. Using quantitative and qualitative methods, classroom observations of 298 middle school teachers across South Carolina from March 2021-May 2022 demonstrated that teachers overwhelmingly enacted practices that foster a warm and welcoming classroom environment that is conducive to learning and academic success. These results suggest the need for further research to offer a more encouraging view of observations as a tool for showcasing teaching practices and the positive learning environment they create.
