Formal teacher preparation and professional development often run counter to the goals of liberation and justice in education that are required for systemic change. We used Participatory Action Research to co-design a holistic model of teacher preparation that cultivates teacher activists, with a specific focus on anti-racism and abolition through community partnership. Despite years of experience in critically-oriented teacher preparation programs, practically enacting theories led our students to ask, “What does abolitionist teaching look like in practice?” which was this study’s guiding question. Findings from our research have implications for small, liberal arts teacher preparation programs, as well as teacher activist groups in thinking about supporting, nurturing, and developing antiracist educators prior to their entrance into the field.
