Advancing Systemic Equality Within a Computer Science Ecosystem: How Personalized Computer Science Coaching Supports Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Pedagogies

Abstract

An identified challenge within CS education is the degree to which professional development and CS coaching impact effective teaching strategies for engagement with computer science for historically underrepresented youth. Applying a computer science (CS) ecosystem lens, this study examines how sustained and personalized computer science coaching supported computer science high school educators in the acquisition and implementation of culturally responsive-sustaining pedagogies within schools primarily serving students of color. We argue that personalized CS coaching is an essential component of CS ecosystems, as CS coaches can provide critical interventions that include just-in-time support for CS educators and improved recruitment strategies that increase enrollments of females and students of color into CS courses.
