Abstract

This paper focuses on the development of a model and instrument to operationalize multidimensional nature of the STEM identity of African American students attending a historically Black college and university. With a focus on social identity (race) and academic identity (STEM), the research project sought to determine whether this conceptualization of STEM identity for African American students is effective in predicting participation in STEM-related activities or careers. This project follows a Critical Race Mixed Methodological approach with the intent to demonstrate to other researchers the importance of using such an approach when designing studies related to the experiences of African American students. An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods design was followed to develop and validate the instrument.
