Where Are Brilliant Black Girls' Voices in Assessments?

Abstract

This quantitative analysis of the California Healthy Kids Survey data intentionally explores Black girls’ experiences in middle schools. Through the usage of principal components analysis, we explored two supplementary modules – Closing the Achievement Gap and the Resilience and Youth Development module – to determine their interactions, support systems, and aspirations in schools. Among findings, hierarchical multiple regression results indicated the addition of Aspirations to the prediction of resilience led to a statistically significant increase in R2 of .170. The model of Aspirations and Community Respect to predict resilience was statistically significant, R2 = .206. Empathy and Resistance were not strong predictors of resilience. Collectively, this corroborates the intentional inclusion of Black girls when interrogating consequential education research in pursuit of truth.
